THE GREAT DEBATERS
Thursday 3 May 2012 @ Thursday, May 03, 2012 | 0 Comment [s]

According to wikipedia , this is a drama film based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson , a professor at Miley College Texas in 1953 that inspired his students to form the School's debate team, which went on to challenge the Harvard in the national champion.  The main stars are Denzel Washington, Nate Parker and the only one heroin Jurnee smollett (she is so adorable) . The great debaters was a great film  because the messages were easily understood by the viewers or the audience. In my opinions, this film can be watched by the general public, students as well as the politician. This is because, the great debaters was a meaningful historical film that contained lots of moral values.

However, I do believe at the particular story line, the audience might get confuse with the relationship between the "public speaking" and "political issues" being pointed especially at the climax of this film.As we can see in this film, "Melvin Tolson" was a professor at Wiley College who have a strong abilities in public speaking and radical political views. At the same time, he was a coach of the debate team that consists of three main great debaters ( samantha booke ) the first woman that enters the team, (Henry Lowe) a rebellious person and outspoken student who spends most of his time at local parties, and (James JR) that worries about the inequality his constantly witnesses. In addition, The Great Debaters was the first colored school to debate Harvard and won the debate session.

Generally, it was about the inequality that the colored people went through in that particular era. The coach who are Mr Tolson was played an important role to change the society itself by using his own medium. He was using the school's debate team in order to overcome the racists being practiced there.  This debate team was certainly fighting for the equality and honor they should have. In my point of views, it involves a thousand of emotions as the spirit, love, sacrifice, and feeling insecure were produced by this film. It reminds me of Za'ba (Pendeta Za'ba) who are Malaysian educator that bring lots of spirits and encourage the Malay people to be more successful .

Looking back at the moral value, it is also inspired me not to afraid of my opponents, and the precious words by Mr Tolson are " Battle those who forces that would take it from you" and he said "their weapons are their words". Meaning that, "war" doesn't necessary involve violence, but we can change the world even with a single word. I hope one day, I can be a successful person and change the world and diminish the large numbers of PATI .

One of the soundtracks (catchy and I like)
